Let's Learn About the Titanic!

Today you will have the job of researching and learning more about the Titanic and its sinking back in 1912. 

 Saturday was the 100^th anniversary of the sinking. This disaster was one of the worst maritime accidents of all time. Your job is to gather facts and information about Titanic, its passengers and crew. You will document the series of events that led up to the sinking of the Titanic.

 

Your task, if you choose to accept it:

1. Complete the background information worksheet by using the appropriate websites.

2. Using the information you gathered on the worksheets, write a two to three page story from the perspective of a survivor of the Titanic tragedy. Tell who you are, how old you are, who you were traveling with, why you were on the Titanic, and what class of passenger you were. Detail your feelings during the evacuation, as you witnessed the sinking, and when you were rescued by the Carpathia. Use description.

When you finish the worksheet, it will need to be glued into your Interactive Notebook. Following the worksheet should be your story. It is okay if it takes multiple pages, but do not renumber your pages.

This assignment will be graded when I return from my workshop in San Antonio. Be sure to do your best work.

Preseident's Day Online Learning

Today it is your job to learn more about 2 of the most famous former Presidents of the United States. 

George Washington, the 1st President of the United States

Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States

These two presidents have made very important decisions for our country that we still abide, or follow, today. 

Firs, you are going to watch a couple of videos about Presidents and also on just Washington and Lincoln. 

Watch the videos in this order. While you are watching the videos, you should take notes on your graphic organizer in your reading and writing notebook. Make sure that you are writing down facts and not opinions.

Now you should stop and think about the research that you have found. Review your notes and figure out why Washington and Lincoln are both so famous. What are they remembered most for? Talk with a partner near you about this. 

Once you have talked with a partner and completed your facts page about Washington and Lincoln, you will need to complete the "If I was President..." writing prompt in your notebook.

Conversation Heart Writing for Valentine's Day

Today we had so much fun writing letter to celebrities, book characters, and authors using conversation hearts. The kids had so much fun and their letters turned out great. Here are some pictures of the fun from today!

Roots and Persuasion

This week has been one full of lots of new learning. We started our week by learning about the stations that we will begin next week. We also learned some about Greek and Latin roots and also began our Persuasive Unit. Here are just a few pictures of some of the things we did this week.



We have been working on our note taking skills together. Usually I will create a large anchor chart like the one above, and then the students are responsible for copying the notes into their Reading and Writing Notebooks. I always ask the question first, and then have the students think about it. Together we share ideas to answer each question that is asked.



After we completed our notes on Greek and Latin roots, each student was responsbile for completing a graphic organizer with one of the 12 roots that we learned about. They turned out great. Some of them are posted below. In each box, students had to write teh definition in a complete sentence, come with 5 examples of their root being used in a word, illustrate the root, and also take three of the words that they came up and use them in a contextual sentence. They all worked so hard on them!

MLK Lesson

On Tuesday we had a great mini-lesson on Martin Luther King Jr. We first read the book, March On!, that was actually written by MLK's sister. The kids thought that it was really neat that MLK'S gave his speech so near to te Lincoln monument because both played such a big role in the fight for equality for Aftican American citizens.Below you will find some pictures of what we did in our notebooks and the students working hard. Sorry for the poor quality of the pictures, but I am always capturing them with my phone. :)
